Preserving Poetical Energy

The text used in the songs are central to the vision and creation of Vajas. Traditionally, the lyrics of Saami yoiks are considered strong and of a distinct character. They often employ the use metaphors, ironies and humor in their lyrics.

However, the texts have traditionally been attached to the context in which they were created. This has made it difficult to use these texts outside of the environment they were created in. Characterizations of individuals may become to intimate to share, and for audiences not familiar with the time and context of events, it can sometimes be difficult for them to understand the meanings of these creations. Our vision is to reduce and transform attachments that weigh down the text. It is our goal to lift the words out of the narrow spaces of their confinement. Yet we do this while at the same time preserving their poetic energy and soul.

The lyrics flow from the Northern Saami language and are then rewritten into the more widely spoken languages of Norwegian and English for all to enjoy.
